OUR PATRIOTS

Picture
At the end of each of our Chapter meetings, we stand in honor of our Patriot and say his
or her name and identify the state where he or she served. So why is it that we have this ritual?

While every chapter has its own take on the opening and closing ceremonies for their
chapter meetings, every once in awhile you come across something that sparks an idea
                              for your own chapter.

In 2005 while attending a Board of Management meeting, two members of our Tualatin
Chapter heard about a chapter that was acknowledging their patriots at each of their chapter
meetings. Thinking that this ritual would be a great idea to remind ourselves
of why we are members of DAR and encourage members to know their patriots’ names
and states, they brought the information back to the chapter.

The chapter members then came up with what we now call “I Stand In Honor” which we
do at the end of every chapter meeting. Just before the meeting is adjourned, we all
stand and, one after the other, we say “I stand in honor of my patriot (stating his/her full
name and sometimes rank in the military) from (stating his/her state of service)”. This
ritual helps us to honor our patriots service during the Revolutionary War and the
                                                                                                                   beginnings of our country.

With the America 250! Committee promoting the upcoming celebration of our country’s
founding, standing in honor takes on even more meaning and ties in perfectly with the
                                                                                                                   mission of NSDAR.
